Professor Nelson’s main research teaching interests lie in the subfields of International Comparative Political Economy. His recent work explores a variety of topics including the politics that shape the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) lending policies and the governance structures of financial markets, particularly in light of the near-collapse of the American financial system in 2008. He also studies the political dynamics involved in the decisions of developing and emerging market countries regarding open economies and international capital flows, as well as how organizational cultures influence the behavior of international institutions and sovereign debt markets. Professor Nelson's book, 'Currency Confidence: Economic Beliefs Shape IMF's Relationship with Borrowers' (Cornell University Press, 2017), which is based on his dissertation, won the American Political Science Association's Helen Dwight Reid Award in 2010. He has published articles in various prestigious journals including International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, Review of International Political Economy, and Review of International Organizations.
