Biography

Stephen Orgel is the Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor of Humanities, Emeritus at Stanford University. He has published widely on the political and historical aspects of Renaissance literature, theater, and art history. His work is interdisciplinary and increasingly focused on the patronage system, the nature of representation, and performance practices of the Renaissance. His recent publications include 'Imagining Shakespeare' (2003), 'The Authentic Shakespeare' (2002), and 'Impersonations: Performance and Gender in Shakespeare's England' (Cambridge, 1996). He has edited several notable works and served as general editor for the Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture and the new Pelican Shakespeare. Orgel has received various honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship and NEH Fellowships and has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
