Biography

Stephen Phillips is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in areas such as Indian Philosophy, Epistemology, Ethics, and Philosophy of Religion. He received his PhD from Harvard University and has been a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii and Jadavpur University. Phillips is the author of ten significant works, including a monumental three-volume translation of the fourteenth-century Sanskrit text Tattva-cintā-maṇi, titled "Jewel Reflection of Truth & Epistemology" published by Bloomsbury in 2020. His writings encompass a variety of topics including a defense of yoga psychology and an overview of yoga philosophy in his book, "Yoga, Karma, Rebirth: A Brief History of Philosophy" (Columbia, 2009). In addition, he has published works on classical Indian epistemology, including "Epistemology in Classical India: Knowledge Sources in the Nyāya School" (Routledge, 2012), which presents classical Indian perspectives in a manner accessible to contemporary philosophers. His collaboration with Matthew Dasti led to the publication of "The Nyāya-sūtra: Selections from Early Commentaries" (Hackett, 2017), and with Nirmalya Guha Dasti, he authored "God and the World's Arrangement" (Hackett, 2021).
