Biography

Stephen Purcell is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick, where he has taught since October 2011. His research focuses on the performance work of Shakespeare's contemporaries as well as theories of audience, space, popular culture, parody, adaptation, and comedy. He is particularly interested in the 20th and 21st-century cultural phenomenon of Shakespeare as a dramatist. Purcell has led practical workshops at various Shakespeare conferences and is passionate about supervising projects related to Shakespeare's contemporaries and modern performance theory. He has completed multiple PhD supervisions and currently supervises several doctoral students. In addition to his research, he co-developed and led an English Literature degree scheme at Southampton Solent University and directs the theatre company Pantaloons. His scholarly contributions include monographs and various publications on topics related to Shakespeare and contemporary performance.
