Dr. Stephen Roady

Biography

Stephen E. Roady holds appointments as a Senior Lecturing Fellow at Duke Law School and as a Professor of Practice in Marine Science Conservation at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. He is also a Faculty Fellow at Duke’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. Prior to joining the Duke faculty in 2016, Roady devoted decades to litigation and administrative advocacy focused on enforcing public health and environmental protections under federal statutes enacted from 1970 to 1990. His work particularly concentrated on improving air and water quality, safeguarding mountain stream ecosystems, and conserving ocean and coastal resources. He managed the oceans program at Earthjustice, a public interest law firm. Roady has litigated and provided counsel in federal court cases related to various federal statutes, including the Clean Air Act and Endangered Species Act, advocating for sustainable fishing practices and public access to environmental information. He has worked extensively with the United States Congress and environmental organizations, engaging in the drafting of legislative provisions and negotiating new national ocean policy. His recent writings focus on deep seabed mining and ocean stewardship. Since 2003, Roady has taught a course on ocean and coastal law policy at Duke Law School, and he received the Professor of the Year Award from Duke's School of the Environment in 2008.
