Biography

Stephen Robbins is currently the Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Cancer Research. He is also the Co-Chair of the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance, representing 30 major cancer research funders in Canada. Robbins completed his undergraduate degree at York University in Biological Sciences in 1985 and obtained his PhD in Medical Specializations from the University of British Columbia in 1991, focusing on Microbiology and Immunology. Following his education, he pursued postdoctoral studies with Nobel laureate Dr. J. Michael Bishop at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1991 to 1996. In 1996, he joined the University of Calgary as a Professor in the Departments of Oncology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology. He has held the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Molecular Genetics and Cancer for 10 years and served as Director of the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute and Associate Director of Research for Alberta Health Services Cancer Care. His research focuses on understanding biochemical circuits that control cellular proliferation and differentiation, particularly how these pathways malfunction in cancer. Notably, Robbins's lab investigates the role of extracellular signals in cellular responses, with aims to identify therapeutic targets for brain tumors and the mechanisms behind cell signaling.
