Biography

Stephen Saideman holds the Paterson Chair in International Affairs at Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and is the Director of the Canadian Defence and Security Network. He has authored five books including 'Ties Divide: Ethnic Politics, Foreign Policy and International Conflict' and 'Overseen Overlooked: Legislators, Armed Forces, Democratic Accountability'. His research primarily focuses on civil-military relations, exploring how countries manage their armed forces and the dynamics between civilian leaders and military institutions. He has received fellowships from the Council on Foreign Relations, Social Sciences Research Council, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and has taught at various institutions including the University of Vermont and McGill University. His recent work investigates the oversight roles of civilian agencies concerning military operations and defense policies in democratic societies. Saideman also engages in public scholarship through his blog and co-hosts the 'Battle Rhythm' podcast.
