Stephen G. Sligar received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois in 1975. He served on the faculty in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University before returning to the University of Illinois in 1982 as the C. Gunsalus Professor of Biochemistry. Sligar holds the Swanlund Endowed Chair and is the Director of the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology. He is also a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and is affiliated with the Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology at the College of Medicine, as well as the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Institute for Genomic Biology. His research focuses on understanding the structure and mechanistic function of metalloenzymes and membrane-bound receptors, including their roles in blood coagulation and amyloid proteins in relation to human disease states. He has received several awards, including a Fulbright Research Scholarship and the NIH Merit Award. He is a fellow of the Biophysical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and his work is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
