Dr. Stephen Smith

Biography

Stephen Smith is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan. He holds a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from Yale University, received in 2008, and has a Master’s degree from the same institution, awarded in 2005. His undergraduate studies were completed at Sarah Lawrence College, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts in 2003. Smith's research interests span several areas including Phylogenetics, computational evolutionary biology, biogeography, and phyloinformatics. He has contributed significantly to the field concerning the study of evolutionary processes and relationships among organisms, helping to improve methodologies in the area of phylogenetic methods theory. An active member of the academic community, he has recently been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for his contributions to the field. Smith also plays a key role in mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral fellows within his laboratory.
