Dr. Stephen Smith

Biography

Stephen R. Smith is a Professor Emeritus in Family Medicine at Brown University, having retired in 2008 after a distinguished career that spanned over 25 years. Smith previously served as the Associate Dean of the medical school and is internationally renowned for his contributions to medical education. He played a key role in designing a competency-based curriculum at Brown, which has been replicated by medical schools worldwide. Additionally, he developed the International Virtual Medical School (IVIMEDS), connecting medical schools globally to enhance education. Smith is also recognized for his activism in healthcare policy, including helping to establish the National Health Service Corps for medical students. He has served in various leadership roles, including Deputy Mayor of New London, Connecticut, and is actively involved in the Rhode Island Free Clinic. Smith's commitment to organized medicine is reflected in his service as treasurer of the National Physicians Alliance. He was awarded the Lifetime Distinguished Service Award from the American Medical Student Association in 2005. In terms of education, Smith earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1972 and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Rochester in 1977.
