Biography

Stephen Strelkov is a Professor in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta, with expertise in plant pathology. His research primarily focuses on host-parasite interactions, exploring the role of host-specific toxins in fungal pathogenicity and plant disease development. Strelkov's work includes the purification and characterization of Ptr ToxB, a host-specific toxin produced by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, the causal agent of tan spot in wheat. Following his arrival at the University of Alberta, his research interests expanded to include the clubroot disease in crucifers, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, which has emerged as a significant issue for canola production in Alberta. His research encompasses questions related to the diversity of pathogen populations and the molecular changes induced in canola genotypes in response to infection. He has also initiated field research focused on developing integrated management strategies for controlling clubroot in canola, complementing ongoing efforts in the management of root diseases affecting field crops. Strelkov collaborates with various researchers at both provincial and national levels to enhance the impact of his research.
