Dr. Stephen Strittmatter

Biography

Stephen M. Strittmatter obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, graduating summa cum laude in 1980, and completed his M.D. and Ph.D. training at Johns Hopkins University in 1986 under the mentorship of Solomon H. Snyder, M.D. Following his medical internship and neurology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, he collaborated as a research fellow with Mark Fishman, M.D., focusing on the molecular basis of axonal guidance. In 1993, he joined Yale University, where he serves as the Vincent Coates Professor of Neurology and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience. He co-founded the Yale Program in Cellular Neuroscience, Neurodegeneration & Repair and has made significant contributions to understanding neural repair and neurodegeneration, particularly in Alzheimer's disease and spinal cord injuries. His research employs modern techniques like CRISPR and single-cell transcriptomic profiling to explore these areas. Strittmatter has received multiple prestigious awards, including the King Faisal International Prize in Medicine.
