Biography

Stephen F. Teiser joined the Department of Religion at Princeton University in 1988, where he holds the title of D. T. Suzuki Professor of Buddhist Studies. His academic work focuses on the interaction of cultures along the Silk Road, utilizing textual, artistic, and material remains to explore the transformations of Buddhism in Asia, with a particular emphasis on Chinese-language materials. His recent monograph, published in Chinese, is titled "Buddhism Study of Ritual, Yilu yu fojiao yanjiu" (Sanlian Publishers, 2022). Teiser's contributions also include the English translation of Chunwen Hao's "Dunhuang Manuscripts: Introduction Texts Silk Road" (2020) and he has authored notable works such as "Reinventing the Wheel: Paintings of Rebirth in Medieval Buddhist Temples" (2006), which received the Prix Stanislas Julien from the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres in France, as well as "Scripture of the Ten Kings: Making Purgatory in Medieval Chinese Buddhism" (1994) and "Ghost Festival in Medieval China" (1988). His courses address various aspects of Chinese religions, Buddhist cosmology, and approaches to the study of religion. In 2014, he was co-recipient of the Graduate Mentoring Award from Princeton's McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning.
