Biography

Stephen J. Tinney is a Clark Research Associate Professor specializing in Assyriology and serves as the Deputy Director of the Penn Museum. He is an Associate Curator in the Babylonian Section and the director of the Pennsylvania Sumerian Dictionary Project. Tinney holds a Bachelor’s degree in Assyriology from Cambridge University, England, and a PhD in Assyriology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. His research interests encompass various aspects of Sumerian language, literature, and culture. Currently, his work is focused on developing and publishing Sumerian texts, as well as analyzing and presenting the Sumerian language. He is dedicated to major projects, including the online Pennsylvania Sumerian Dictionary (ePSD), which he began working on after joining Penn in 1991 as a postdoctoral research assistant. He also directs the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative based at UCLA.
