Biography

Stephen joined the University of Edinburgh as a Lecturer in Accounting in 1991 after training as a chartered accountant at Ernst & Young. He was appointed Professor of Accounting and served as Head of Accounting at Cardiff Business School from 2003 until he returned to Edinburgh in 2013, where he assumed the role of Head of the Accounting Finance Group from 2015 to 2018. Stephen is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Historical Society, as well as an Academic Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He has served as an editor for various academic journals, including the Accounting History Review and the Accounting Historians Journal, and has guest edited special issues for several others. He has been awarded the Hourglass Award by the Academy of Accounting Historians and has received multiple journal prizes for his research productivity in the field of accounting in the UK. Stephen has also held visiting positions at several prestigious universities across the globe, including in France, Australia, and New Zealand.
