Dr. Stephen Waxman

Biography

Stephen Waxman is the Bridget M. Flaherty Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience, and Pharmacology at Yale University. He served as Chairman of Neurology from 1986 to 2009 and founded the Neuroscience & Regeneration Research Center at Yale in 1988, where he currently serves as Director. His research utilizes the molecular revolution to develop new therapies aimed at restoring function to the nervous system after injury. He has published over 800 scientific papers, with an impressive H-index of 126, and has notably contributed to defining the architecture of ion channels in nerve fibers. Dr. Waxman has demonstrated significant findings in his studies on sodium channel plasticity, which supports recovery of impulse conduction in demyelinated axons, and has played a pivotal role in identifying sodium channel mutations that cause peripheral neuropathy. His lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms of functional recovery in diseases of the brain and spinal cord, using diverse methods from molecular biology to electrophysiology. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field, including the Dystel Prize and the Julius Axelrod Prize, among others. He is also an active member of the National Academy of Medicine and has served on multiple editorial boards.
