Biography

Stephen Welch has over 30 years of experience in fire research and teaching, having worked a decade at the BRE's Fire Research Station where he conducted full-scale fire tests. He joined the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh in 2004. His research encompasses various topics, particularly computational simulation of fire and structures. Welch has supervised 30 PhD students and has served as an external examiner for numerous others. His teaching focuses on fire safety engineering practices and includes critiques of related regulations and design principles. He was the Programme Director for the MSc in Structural Fire Safety Engineering from 2008 to 2023, overseeing more than 120 graduates, and has also been a member of the management board for the International Master Fire Safety Engineering since 2010. His academic qualifications include a BA in Engineering, an MSc in Automotive Product Engineering from Cranfield University, and a PhD in Computational Modelling of Diesel Engine Smoke Emission. Welch is actively involved in various research projects and initiatives related to fire safety.
