Biography

Stephen Wilford is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, specializing in Ethnomusicology, Popular Music, and Sound Studies. His research focuses on the music and soundscapes of North Africa, particularly Algeria, exploring a range of traditional and contemporary musics, including the region's Andalusi traditions and the Franco-Algerian hip hop scene. He examines the intersections of music and sound within public and private spaces during colonial and postcolonial periods, with concerns surrounding collective identity, cultural memory, and the circulation of music and sound. He completed his AHRC-funded PhD at City, University of London, which emphasized music-making within the Algerian diaspora community in London. In addition to teaching roles, he has been involved with various academic committees and research initiatives, including the British Forum of Ethnomusicology and the Royal Anthropological Institute. He is currently writing a monograph with Liverpool University Press and co-editing a collected volume for Oxford University Press.
