Biography

Steve Alpern is a Professor of Operational Research at Warwick Business School. He joined the ORMS group after a long tenure at the London School of Economics where he also held a professorship in Mathematics and Operational Research. His academic journey began in America, where he completed his AB at Princeton University, writing a Senior Thesis on Oskar Morgenstern, and went on to earn his PhD from the Courant Institute at NYU, with a focus on dynamical systems under the guidance of Peter Lax. Throughout his career, he has taught at notable institutions including NYU, UCLA, Bryn Mawr College, and Yale University. His early research concentrated on ergodic theory and dynamical systems, collaborating with recognized scholars like J. Oxtoby, S. Kakutani, and V. Prasad. Alpern's current research interests encompass various areas of Operational Research, including game theory and search theory, especially focusing on rendezvous search and decentralized matching theories. Recently, he has been applying theoretical results from search theory to biological contexts, such as the behavior of predators and their prey, and is exploring group decision-making problems within committees and juries.
