Professor Steve Elston undertook a degree in mathematics and physics at Exeter University and continued at the Exeter physics department to study for a Ph.D. under the direction of Professor Roy Sambles (FRS). He moved to Oxford in 1991, where he held a senior research fellowship at Somerville College, funded by GEC/Marconi and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Following this, he was awarded a Royal Society Research Fellowship. In 1996, Steve became a university lecturer in engineering science at Oxford, holding a joint tutorial fellowship at St. John’s College. Steve's current research interests mainly focus on novel liquid crystal materials and their applications, and he engages in both theoretical and experimental work. His theoretical research includes applications of liquid crystal continuum theory and the study of novel liquid crystal phases, as well as the interactions of order and elasticity within liquid crystalline systems. His experimental work encompasses the investigation of alignment and switching processes in novel liquid crystal phases, as well as the applications of liquid crystalline materials in display technology and surface sensing systems.
