Biography

Steve L. Kunkel, Ph.D., is the Executive Vice Dean for Research and Chief Scientific Officer at the University of Michigan Medical School, effective September 1, 2019. He has a long history at the University of Michigan, where he joined the faculty in 1980. Kunkel has held various leadership positions, including Interim Associate Vice President for Research and Senior Associate Dean for Research. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of lung inflammation, particularly in relation to cytokine and chemokine biology. His work has garnered international recognition, contributing to over 600 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 60 book chapters. He has received continuous funding from multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants and is a recipient of the NIH MERIT Award. Over the past decade, he has delivered more than 150 lectures as a visiting professor or lecturer. He is the co-chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the NIAID at NIH and serves as an associate editor for professional scientific journals.
