Biography

Steve Lund is a Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California Dornsife College. He received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Minnesota in 1981, and he holds an M.S. in Geophysics and a B.S. in Geology, both from the same institution. His primary research interests include Earth's magnetic field variability, geobiology, geophysics, and tectonics. Lund’s work in geomagnetism focuses on identifying patterns of directional intensity variation, magnetic field polarity, and geometry transitions. He has specialized in paleomagnetic studies of sedimentary rocks and the influence of diagenetic and biological processes on remanence acquisition in sediments. Lund also investigates Quaternary paleoclimate and paleoceanography, employing paleomagnetic methods to date sediment sequences and improve the understanding of sedimentary rock magnetic variability. Additionally, he applies paleomagnetic principles to microplate tectonics to address structural geology problems, and he utilizes time-series analysis to interpret paleoclimate data. Lund has received significant funding from the National Science Foundation for various research initiatives related to geomagnetic field variability and paleomagnetic studies.
