Biography

Currently, Steve Mutsaers serves as an Associate Professor and Head of Discipline for Pharmacology and Toxicology in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute for Respiratory Health. His main research interests focus on investigating the mechanisms regulating tissue repair and regeneration, especially concerning diseases related to lung mesothelium. Steve completed his PhD in Pathology at UWA in 1993, emphasizing regeneration. He then underwent postdoctoral training at the National Heart and Lung Institute, University College London, focusing on profibrotic mediators and their roles in pulmonary fibrosis and mesothelial healing in malignant mesothelioma. After returning to Australia in 2001, he established research laboratories and developed a reputation for his work on lung fibrosis and malignant mesothelioma. He has published over 100 manuscripts in leading international journals, organized numerous conferences, and has supervised several graduate students. Throughout his career, Steve has received multiple awards, including the Cancer Council WA Research Fellowship and the International Mesothelioma Interest Group Service Award, along with being a prominent figure in editorial boards and grant review panels.
