Dr. Nutt joined the faculty at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1994 as a Professor of Materials Science. He founded the M.C. Gill Composites Center in 1996 and has served as the Director of the Center to the present date. At the Viterbi School of Engineering, he was the Senior Associate Dean for Research from 2005 to 2006 and Chair of the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from 2011 to 2014. He is currently the co-Director of the Center for Electron Microscopy and MicroAnalysis (CEMMA), established in 1994. Dr. Nutt obtained his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Virginia in 1982 and held the M.C. Gill Chair in Composite Materials at USC. His research group is focused on the processing science of fiber-reinforced composites, exploring mechanisms that govern the production of composite laminates and structures. His group's work emphasizes the integration of process diagnostics and the development of instrumented test beds, along with process modeling. The research areas encompass aerospace, wind energy, and automotive applications, with particular attention to high-temperature phenomena and the mechanical performance of composites. Dr. Nutt has received various awards for his contributions, including the USC Mellon Mentoring Award in 2014 and several conference paper awards.
