Biography

Professor Steve Sheard completed his PhD at University College London in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He specializes in scanning microscopy and joined GEC Hirst Research Laboratory in North Wembley before moving to Oxford in October 1988 to take on his current role as University Lecturer and Tutorial Fellow at Trinity College. His research interests broadly cover the area of optics, particularly in the development of optical waveguide devices and surface emitter lasers. Throughout his career, he has been involved in integrating electronics for telecommunication systems in collaboration with major industrial companies. This technology has been applied to optical sensors, specifically in water quality monitoring utilizing a sensor based on optical back scattering. In recent years, his work has increasingly focused on microfluidics, exploring the manipulation of micron-sized magnetic beads as a potential platform for performing bioassays and continuous flow cell separation. In addition to his research, he currently has openings for additional research students in Communications Engineering DPhil opportunities.
