Biography

Steven Bergens is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta. He obtained his BSc and MSc from the University of Toronto and his PhD from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on enantioselective homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, particularly in the context of electrochemical reactions in fuel cells. His work involves the design and synthesis of new chiral transition metal catalysts, as well as elucidating the mechanisms of enantioselective catalytic transformations through various techniques including isotope substitution and low temperature NMR. He is also actively involved in the development of highly reusable polymeric catalysts and the study of fuel cell efficiency and functionality. Graduate students in his research group acquire proficiency in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry, enantioselective catalysis, and electrochemistry, alongside hands-on experience in constructing and operating prototype fuel cells.
