Dr. Steven Brooks is a Professor and Clinician-Scientist in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Queen's University. He completed his medical training at Queen's University, followed by residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of British Columbia, where he also earned a Master’s in Health Sciences. Dr. Brooks completed a clinical research fellowship in pre-hospital transport medicine at the University of Toronto. His research interests center around cardiac arrest resuscitation, particularly in developing methods to improve bystander resuscitation for victims of cardiac arrest prior to hospital arrival. He is the principal investigator of the PulsePoint randomized controlled trial, which investigates the effectiveness of a crowdsourced mobile application for basic life support in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest situations. Additionally, he leads the Neighbours Saving Neighbours pilot program, assessing volunteer community responders in neighborhoods at risk for prolonged ambulance response times. Dr. Brooks has a special interest in innovative methods to improve public access to defibrillation and has chaired an international task force on this topic. He is a member of the Resuscitation Advisory Committee for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Immediate Past Chair of the Science Subcommittee for the American Heart Association's Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee. Furthermore, Dr. Brooks is the Ontario lead for the Canadian COVID-19 Emergency Department Rapid Response Network and conducts research on the epidemiology and health services aspects of COVID-19. He also serves as the Chief Medical Officer for the start-up company Rapid Response Revival, which manufactures the CellAED, a miniaturized, single-use automated external defibrillator designed for easy access in households.
