Biography

Steven Chu is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Physics at Stanford University, where he specializes in molecular cellular physiology and energy science engineering. He obtained his A.B. in mathematics and B.S. in physics from the University of Rochester, and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. Chu served as the U.S. Secretary of Energy from January 2009 to April 2013, during which he initiated several key energy initiatives such as ARPA-E and the Energy Innovation Hubs. Prior to this role, he was the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and professor at UC Berkeley. He is noted for his pioneering work in laser cooling and optical trapping of atoms, as well as for significant contributions to biophysics, medical imaging, and energy research. In recognition of his scientific advancements, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997 and has received numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including membership in various national academies and over 35 honorary degrees.
