Biography

Steven Conolly is a Full Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, where he holds the Montford G. Cook Endowed Chair. He was the elected Chair of the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Graduate Group in Bioengineering from 2006 to 2009 and currently serves as Vice Chair for Instruction in Bioengineering at UC Berkeley. Professor Conolly specializes in medical imaging and biosensing hardware, with a focus on Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). His research group has developed MPI scanners in the USA, which show extraordinary promise as a safe, noninvasive, quantitative imaging method. The biomedical applications of MPI include stem cell tracking, perfusion imaging, and cancer imaging. He has won research support from institutions such as the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), UC Discovery, the Siebel Foundation, and the Keck Foundation. Conolly has received over 30 patents, with more than half licensed to industry. In 2004, he was honored with Stanford's prestigious Outstanding Inventor award.
