Steven Dubinett became interested in lung cancer immunology research as a pulmonary research fellow in the Department of Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He participated in a clinical trial using tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes to treat patients with cancer, observing dramatic anti-tumor responses in patients with renal cancer and melanoma, while patients with lung cancer showed varied responses to therapy. After moving to UCLA in 1988, he began a research program focusing on understanding why certain lung cancer patients respond to immunotherapy. His research has explored the immune and inflammatory mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of lung cancer and has received funding from organizations such as Stand Up To Cancer, the NCI Moonshot initiative, and the NCI Early Detection Research Network. His lab aims to improve early detection and interception of lung cancer through mechanism-based translational studies that evaluate combination immunotherapies for advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Recent studies have assessed strategies for enhancing immune responses through checkpoint blockade and situ vaccination using gene-modified autologous dendritic cells.
