Steven D. Hoelscher is a distinguished academic in the fields of American Studies and Geography. He joined the Department of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin in 2000 after completing his PhD in Geography at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1995. He has also held a position as a Senior Fulbright Professor at the North American Studies Program at the University of Bonn during 2003-2004. Hoelscher’s research interests include the history of photography, urban studies, and the social constructions of space and place, particularly in relation to ethnicity, race, and cultural memory. In addition to his academic role, he is the Academic Curator of Photography at the Harry Ransom Center. He is known for teaching courses in American Studies and Geography, and has also led study abroad programs, including a Maymester course in Vienna, Austria. Hoelscher received the Texas President's Associates Teaching Excellence Award in 2005 from the University of Texas at Austin.
