Born and raised in the Upper Midwest, Steven Hoelscher joined the Department of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin in 2000 after teaching at Louisiana State University. He completed his Ph.D. in Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hoelscher was also a Senior Fulbright Professor in the North American Studies Program at the University of Bonn during the 2003-2004 academic year. His work spans American Studies and the Harry Ransom Center, where he serves as Faculty Curator of Photography. His research interests include the history of photography, American race and racism, North American and European urbanism, social constructions of space and place, and cultural memory. Hoelscher has published over 40 book chapters and articles in various journals, including the American Indian Culture Research Journal, American Quarterly, and the Journal of Historical Geography. He has received the University of Texas President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award and teaches classes on American Studies, Geography, and History, including the notable study abroad course in Vienna, Austria.
