Dr. Steven Howard

Biography

Steven K. Howard is a Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology at Stanford University, where he has significantly contributed to the field of perioperative pain medicine and education. After obtaining his MD from the Chicago Medical School in 1987, he completed an internship at Cedars-Sinai and furthered his training in Anesthesia at Stanford. His academic appointments include Chair of the Clinical Competence Committee in the Department of Anesthesia from 2011 to 2022. He has been honored with several accolades, including membership in the Dean's Honor Society of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Alpha Omega Alpha, as well as being elected to the Association University Anesthesiologists. Howard has played an integral role in the advancement of clinical simulation training, earning the Excellence Clinical Simulation Training Award from the SimLEARN program in 2017. His research interests converge on human performance among medical personnel, with a focus on the impacts of sleep deprivation and fatigue on clinical performance. He utilizes realistic simulations to teach crisis resource management techniques and is actively involved in various professional committees within anesthesiology and medical simulation. Howard continues to contribute to the academic community by teaching courses in anesthesia at Stanford.
