Steven Mana‘oakamai Johnson is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) human-environment geographer. He was born and raised on the island of Saipan, located in Micronesia. His research is informed by his heritage and upbringing, focusing on the impacts of conservation and climate change on coastal communities, primarily in the Pacific Islands. Steven utilizes social, environmental, and climate data to develop equitable cooperative solutions that address the challenges faced by these communities. He earned his Ph.D. in Geography from Oregon State University in 2021, an M.S. in Biology from the University of Guam Marine Laboratory in 2017, and a B.S. in Biology from Barry University in 2010. His recent research interests include human-environment geography, conservation, ocean studies, coral reefs, social-ecological systems, climate justice, environmental justice, and indigenous knowledge.
