Biography

Steven Mana‘oakamai Johnson is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) human-environment geographer. He focuses on the impacts of conservation and climate change on coastal communities, primarily in the Pacific Islands. He integrates social, environmental, and climate data to develop equitable and cooperative solutions for these communities. His work is directly tied to his responsibility (kuleana) to use his knowledge and skills to improve social and environmental conditions. Steven completed his Ph.D. in Geography in 2021 at Oregon State University, following a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Guam in 2017 and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Barry University in 2010. His research interests include human-environment geography, conservation, ocean studies, coral reefs, social-ecological systems, climate justice, environmental justice, and indigenous knowledge.
