Steven Patterson graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Alberta with a DDS in 1986. He later completed a graduate degree in public health, receiving an MPH from the University of Washington in 1996, as well as a Certificate in Addiction Studies from the University of Alberta in 2001. Currently a Full Professor in the Mike Petryk School of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, he teaches dental, medical, and dental hygiene students in public health, patient-centered care, addictions, tobacco cessation, prevention of dental disease, and ethics. His contributions to oral health education have been recognized with various awards, including the Bulyea Cup in 2024, the W.W. Wood Excellence in Dental Education Award in 2005, and the National Dental Teaching Award in 2013. Dr. Patterson also serves as an Associate Dental Public Health Officer and has experience in supervising dentistry for Indigenous Services Canada. His research interests include dental admissions, interprofessional education, addictions, tobacco cessation, and caries prevention, and he has presented numerous workshops and courses both nationally and internationally.
