Biography

Steven J. Petruzzello is a Professor in the Neuroscience Program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He directs the Exercise Psychophysiology Laboratory, focusing on the interplay between affective and cognitive responses during exercise and physical activity. His research seeks to understand how different personality traits influence physical activity levels and the psychological effects of exercise on mental well-being. He also studies the unique responses of first responders and tactical athletes in extreme environments, particularly in relation to mental health issues connected to insufficient physical activity. Employing a variety of psychophysiological measures, his work investigates the changes that occur before, during, and after exercise and aims to enhance adherence to physical activity by improving the associated emotional responses.
