Biography

Steven Ratner is the Bruno Simma Collegiate Professor of Law and Director of the University of Michigan's Donia Human Rights Center. His scholarship and teaching focus on public international law, including issues surrounding war and peace, human rights, foreign investment, the United Nations, and territorial disputes. Ratner began his legal career as an attorney-adviser in the Office of Legal Adviser at the Department of State. He joined the Law School in 2004 after serving on the board of editors of the American Journal of International Law from 1998 to 2008. His experience includes being appointed by the UN secretary-general to a three-person group of experts on Khmer Rouge justice and serving on the UN's panel of experts on Sri Lanka, advising on human rights violations related to the civil war. He was also involved as a commissioner on the UN Human Rights Council's International Commission of Human Rights Experts in Ethiopia. Ratner has been an advisor with the International Committee of the Red Cross and is active in various international law initiatives. He has held prominent roles within the American Society of International Law and served on the State Department’s Advisory Committee on International Law.
