Dr. Steven Schofield

Biography

Steven R. Schofield is a Professor of Physics at University College London, where he holds a joint appointment with the London Centre Nanotechnology. His academic journey began at the University of Newcastle in Australia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science. He later pursued his PhD at the University of New South Wales, focusing on condensed matter physics. Steven’s doctoral research was supervised by notable figures such as Professors Robert Clark and Michelle Simmons, significantly shaping his approach to research. After completing his PhD in 2003, he received the Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship, setting the foundation for his independent research career. In 2008, Steven transitioned to the UK and, the following year, was awarded a five-year EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellowship. He joined UCL as a Lecturer in 2012 and advanced to Professor in Physics. His research is centered on exploring quantum properties of matter at the atomic scale, employing techniques such as ultrahigh vacuum cryogenic scanning tunnelling microscopy and synchrotron-based momentum-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. He applies theoretical approaches like density functional theory and is particularly interested in the atomic-scale quantum properties that could be harnessed for future classical and quantum information technologies.
