Biography

Steven Schwendeman is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and also has a professorial role in Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering. His research focuses on the mechanistic approaches to control the release of biomacromolecular drugs and vaccine antigens, especially in challenging areas like hydrophobic anticancer drugs. His laboratory examines the physical and chemical stability of microencapsulated bioactive agents and the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for instability in substances, particularly proteins and biomacromolecules commonly used in controlled release applications. Schwendeman has devised new methods for facile microencapsulation of biomacromolecular therapeutics that boast strong advantages over existing methods. He has also developed patented methods for surface modification of PLGA using functional emulsifiers that enhance the biofunctionality of polymers. His ongoing research continues to investigate the mechanisms behind controlled release, particularly in the context of long-acting injectable drug delivery systems for treating and preventing cancer.
