Dr. Steven Smith

Biography

Steven Herbert Smith, professor emeritus of piano at Penn State University, has performed concerts across four continents and recorded solo recitals for French, German, and Spanish national radios, as well as for PBS Television in America. His recent projects include a comprehensive and acclaimed series of Beethoven recitals released as compact discs titled 'Piano Masterworks of Beethoven,' which received superlative reviews. Smith's performances include master classes in Beijing and Zhengzhou, China, and notable participation in the London International Piano Symposium. His recitals have been critically acclaimed, particularly in recent-music programs presented in New York and London. He has conducted workshops focused on technical and musical teachings, notably in the method of Tobias Matthay. Smith served as president of the American Matthay Association for Piano from 2022 to 2024 and has received multiple teaching awards from the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association and Penn State’s College of Arts and Architecture. His honors include receiving a Fulbright Scholarship for study in Austria and the Clara Wells Award from the American Matthay Association. He has frequently performed as a concerto soloist with regional orchestras, and over 80 of his performances are available on his YouTube channel.
