Steven K. Vogel is the Director of the Political Economy Program and the Il Han New Professor of Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in political economy of advanced industrialized nations, particularly Japan. His recent book, entitled 'Marketcraft: Governments Make Markets Work' (Oxford, 2018), argues that markets arise spontaneously and are crafted by individuals, firms, and governments. Thus, 'marketcraft' represents a core function of government comparable to statecraft. Vogel critically reviews the implications of this argument, providing insights into policy. He is also the author of 'Japan Remodeled: How Government and Industry Are Reforming Japanese Capitalism' (Cornell, 2006) and co-editor of 'Political Economy Reader: Contending Perspectives on Contemporary Debates' (Routledge, 2022). His earlier work, 'Freer Markets, More Rules: Regulatory Reform in Advanced Industrial Countries' (Cornell, 1996), won the Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize. In addition to his academic work, Vogel has contributed to popular press as a columnist for Newsweek-Japan and has worked as a freelance journalist in Japan and France. He has taught at institutions such as the University of California, Irvine and Harvard University.
