Biography

Steven Watson is an Associate Professor in Transdisciplinary Studies at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Wolfson College. His research focuses on Autopoietic Ecology, a theoretical framework that explores how systems regenerate through recursive processes involving meaning, matter, and technology. Rather than viewing knowledge and society as grounded in fixed foundations, this approach encourages an understanding of the continual regeneration of interactions within educational, democratic, and societal contexts, particularly in light of complexities such as climate change and generative artificial intelligence. Watson co-founded EdgeLab, a Cambridge-based initiative that provides an experimental space for theory and practice to intersect, allowing for the development and application of Autopoietic Ecology concepts through collaborative projects. He is also a co-founder of the Cambridge Global Knowledge Nexus, which focuses on applying academic research to real-world challenges in education and civic resilience. As a public speaker, Watson participates in global discussions on AI, education, and democracy, engaging with audiences at prestigious institutions and forums worldwide. His forthcoming works continue to extend the discussion of Autopoietic Ecology in contemporary contexts.
