Dr. Steven Weitzman

Biography

Steven Weitzman specializes in Hebrew Bible origins and Jewish culture. He has authored several significant publications including 'Surviving Sacrilege: Cultural Persistence in Jewish Antiquity' (Harvard University Press, 2005), 'Religion and Self in Antiquity' (Indiana University Press, 2005), and 'Jews: A History' (Prentice Hall, 2009), along with a biography on King Solomon published by Yale University Press in 2011. Weitzman holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. His academic career includes years of teaching at Indiana University in the Department of Religious Studies, where he directed the Jewish Studies program for six years. He has also held the position of Daniel E. Koshland Professor of Jewish Culture and Religion at Stanford University and currently serves as the Abraham M. Ellis Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is the director of the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. His research interests encompass the origins of Jewish history, the intersection of culture and religion, and the literary conventions of the Hebrew Bible.
