Biography

Steven E. Whang is a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University. He is jointly affiliated with the Kim Jaechul Graduate School of AI and has previously held the position of Associate Professor at KAIST in the Electrical Engineering department. His research interests focus on Data-centric AI and Responsible AI. Steven has served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering from 2023 to 2025 and will be an Area Chair for ICLR in 2025. Before his current role, he was a Research Scientist at Google Research, where he co-developed the data infrastructure for the TensorFlow Extended (TFX) machine learning platform. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at Stanford University in 2012 under the supervision of Prof. Hector Garcia-Molina. Steven is also a member of the Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology and has held the Kwon Oh-Hyun Endowed Chair Professor position from 2020 to 2023. In 2018, he received the Google AI Focused Research Award in Asia.
