Biography

Professor Steven Whiting taught at the University of Illinois before joining the University of Michigan faculty. He completed his Master of Music and PhD degrees and has a background in undergraduate education, having studied at Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel, Germany, under a Fulbright study grant. Whiting has published twenty articles and book chapters, focusing on topics such as Beethoven, Satie, French cabaret music, and E.T.A. Hoffmann. He co-edited L. Ringer’s "Musik als Geschichte" and authored the book "Satie Bohemian: Cabaret Concert Hall," which was recognized as an outstanding academic book by Choice. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he served as the director of the University’s Center for European Studies and as the associate director of the International Institute. He also held the position of associate dean for graduate studies at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance from 2003 to 2014.
