Dr. Steven Wilkinson

Biography

Steven Wilkinson is the Dean of Yale's Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Nilekani Professor of India South Asian Studies and Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at Yale University. He earned his Ph.D. from MIT and has held several prestigious positions, including Henry R. Luce Director at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies from 2019 to 2024 and Vice Provost for Global Strategy. His academic career also includes serving as Acting Dean of Social Sciences and Chair of the Department of Political Science. Wilkinson's research focuses on political conflict in India, highlighted in his book 'Votes and Violence,' which was awarded the 2005 Woodrow Wilson Award for the best book in politics, government, and international affairs. He has co-edited influential works on political accountability and has published 'Army Nation,' which examines India's management of its colonial army post-1947. He is currently working on articles and books related to political change and India's defense structure. Wilkinson has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, cementing his status as a leading scholar in his field.
