Dr. Steven Yearley

Biography

Steve Yearley holds a Chair in the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge at the University of Edinburgh. His work primarily focuses on social studies of science and environmental sociology, particularly examining how environmental issues intersect with Science and Technology Studies (STS). He has explored the ways in which environmental activists adapt and deal with scientific evidence, as well as delving into environmental controversies that entail significant scientific elements, such as climate change and debates around genetically modified organisms. Steve has also led initiatives to enhance public engagement in technical decision-making related to environmental matters. He has played a vital role in fostering cross-disciplinary connections, notably serving as the Director of the ESRC Genomics Policy & Research Forum, and engaging with urban air-quality issues. Steve's teaching encompasses advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses that emphasize the interplay of knowledge, expertise, and policy.
