Biography

Stuart Bramwell is an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Methodology at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His academic training includes a DPhil from Oxford University. Stuart's research interests primarily focus on the political elites' dynamics, the role of social identity—which encompasses gender, class, and ethnic identity—in shaping political participation, and how these factors mediate the relationship between governing elites and the broader population. He actively employs a range of methodologies, including machine learning and text analysis, as well as manual web searches to inform his research. He is notably a co-creator of the WhoGov dataset, which has contributed significantly to the study of political participation and has received the Lijphart/Przeworski/Verba dataset award from the American Political Science Association. In his current project, Stuart collaborates with colleagues from the University of Oslo and Harvard University to explore the implications of democracy on rates of female political participation.
