Stuart Howell completed his Honours degree in Psychology in 1990 and began his career as a research statistician in 1992. Over his career, he has worked in various settings including academia, government health departments, and non-government organizations. In 1997, he joined the Department of Medicine at the University of Sydney to oversee a program of studies focusing on the epidemiology of gastrointestinal illnesses. Stuart has extensive experience in large-scale, population-based data collections and longitudinal survey studies as well as administrative patient data collections. His current research interests are centered around the characterization and management of confounding bias in epidemiological studies, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He has also engaged in significant projects related to pre-hospital care, critical care, and trauma.
